One of the most difficult parts of homeschooling is the questions. Kids ask a lot of questions. I can't shrug off questions. I can't reply with sarcasm. I can't tell lies. And I can't say, "ask your teacher." Tonight Remy posed a new question while watching the Falcon's playoff game with Ron. A question that left us unsure where to go."Dad, why are there more brown skinned football players than peach skinned ones?"
Ron and I have worked hard to raise the kids to judge people based on their actions and words first. We've worked hard to make certain we don't refer to a person or group by skin color. There's always another and more accurate way to describe someone. I think we've done well with our kids but, naturally, they do notice differences in physical appearance and they give it their own name. I love the innocence of the question but I must admit the answer isn't. How do you answer on an 8 year old level? My immediate response was that I didn't know. That didn't sway Remy. His reply was simply to "look it up." Alas, the internet does not hold the answer to his observation.
I just got around to checking out your blog! Welcome to the world of blogging. It's addictive! It's fun to see how the R5 is doing! Tell everyone hello from us Utards!
ReplyDeletethat's a toughie. I'd be scared to see the answers that you found online ... and aren't you glad that YOU were there to answer that query and not a classroom teacher?!?
